Dirty and broken flat - disappointed tenant

We had a bad experience with Stewart Oliver as tenants. When we first moved into the property, the flat had been left in an extremely dirty condition. There was a dirty mug, dirty cutlery, and hair, dust, and rubbish everywhere, particularly under furniture. The flat took us two weeks in total to clean. The bed was broken, the boiler was broken, two dining chairs were broken, and the hoover was broken. Therefore, we were unable to move into the flat until 3 days after we began paying rent whilst they replaced the bed and then slowly the other items. We had to scramble together cash to find somewhere to stay close by and were never offered compensation for this by Stewart Oliver. Early on in the tenancy, we sent Stewart Oliver chocolates and a thank you card in an attempt to establish a good relationship with them, but this didn't improve anything. One of the windows never closed properly and let in a strong cold draft, especially during the winter months. Stewart Oliver refused to fix this, even though it was integral to the property and our living standards. To top it all, when the tenancy ended, Stewart Oliver tried to charge us over £200 for a poor inventory check and professional cleaning for small things such as "light dust", oven clean and defrosting the freezer, even though the flat was in pristine condition compared to when we moved in. We even asked the inventory clerk on the day if there were any issues as we still had time to clean, but he said there were no problems with the flat. Then he brought up these issues in his report. The inventory check did not review the flat thoroughly and was clearly biased on the side of the landlords. Half of this charge we managed to recoup through a lengthy ADR process. I would strongly recommend that any future tenants avoid Stewart Oliver. They are working to get as much money as possible for landlords and do not care about the quality of living standards or wellbeing of tenants. Read the other tenant reviews online and you will see that this is not an isolated experience.
