I visited the Portswood Sainsbury’s recently with my uncle to buy some groceries. My uncle also wanted to buy a bottle of liquor for himself. When we went to pay at the counter, the young lady at the till refused to sell us the bottle and asked me for ID, even though my uncle was the one purchasing and paying for it. I explained that I was just accompanying him, and that the bottle was for him, but she ignored us and called for assistance without explaining why. An older lady then came over, and her attitude felt very dismissive and disrespectful — it even felt discriminatory. She took the bottle away and told my uncle he wasn’t allowed to buy it, even though he was of legal age. This happened in front of other customers, and my uncle felt extremely embarrassed and humiliated. It was as if he was being treated like he had done something wrong or like a thief, which was deeply upsetting. We shop at this Sainsbury’s two or three times a week, but after this experience, we no longer feel comfortable coming back. My uncle was treated very unfairly and with no respect. I hope the management reviews this incident and ensures staff are trained to handle customers more professionally and politely.
