We rented from Isabelle Estate Agents for 2.5 years, and we feel compelled to share our experience to warn future tenants. Our time in the property was marred by an incredibly difficult landlord and an estate agent with very little care for the tenant’s rights or safety, leaving us feeling unsupported and vulnerable. Whilst renting a property via Isabelle Estates, our rent was always paid on time, we maintained and fixed various faults with the property, regularly cleaned and maintained the gardens (all invoiced and receipted) and had absolutely no issues/warnings raised with us when regular inspections were conducted. Firstly, there were several alarming incidents where workers showed up at our property unannounced to address maintenance issues the landlord had arranged without our consent. On one occasion, I was petrified to come home to find four workers in my garden without any prior notice. Despite my calls to the agency requesting they inform us in advance, this continued to happen. It was a blatant disregard for our safety and privacy. After raising our concerns with the Property Ombudsman due to the agency's misconduct, they were fined due to lack of response after concerns were raised. A small but reassuring acknowledgment for their poor practice. We also dealt with a broken conservatory door that was left unable to be closed during the winter months. The landlord refused to take action for the issue after the door had been inspected and costs realised. He then claimed it was our fault, despite clear evidence and numerous warnings from us that the door was fragile & getting worse prior to breaking completely. In the process of trying to get the door fixed via the estate agent, James, the agency manager continuously ignored our cries for support, only responding to tell us the landlord’s stance remained the same and they were in support of him. We ultimately had to involve the council just to get the door fixed, and throughout this ordeal, the estate agents were more interested in sending us coercive emails to intimidate us into backing down, in support of the landlord. Even after the door was due to be repaired thanks to action from the council, James told us the landlord had planned to deduct the repair costs from our deposit which caused a lot of distress. We have now bought our own property so have moved out of the rented property from Isabelle Estates. We were present for the check-out process conducted with James and told the property was well kept with only the windows to be cleaned professionally (our window cleaner cancelled last minute) and some paint to be removed for the second bedroom. After the check-out process, we didn’t get communications about when and how we would receive deposit so we chased, twice before response. James sent us the communication between himself and the landlord whereby the landlord used aggressive language to accuse us of poor maintenance of the property, something we heavily dispute. In this email, the landlord also noted he’d taken photos of us whilst in the property. James said the landlord was ‘very cross’ but did not show support to us, despite acknowledging at the check-out process that these property had been well maintained. We’ve now filed a report with the police due to the landlord’s harassment. This entire experience has been incredibly stressful, and I want to make sure other potential tenants are aware of the risks involved with renting through Isabelle Estate Agents. They do not prioritise tenant welfare which can leave you in very vulnerable positions. The council were incredibly supportive so do lean on them when you come into trouble with the landlord and estate agents for repairs that make your home unsafe. Don’t be afraid to report Isabelle to the Property Ombudsman too - it’s a lengthy process but worth the action.
