Customer service by some of the staff leaves a lot to be desired! Be mindful when choosing an agent.
Incredibly rude woman in the lettings team. I contacted them over concerns they didn't realise they had placed a family of 4 in 1 bedroom flat. She didn't want to hear this & told me I was misinformed. When living in the same area you see who is coming & going. She said her manager was saying in the background that there was nothing they could do about it - this is not correct. Surely a good agent would investigate & appreciate the information. Previously a tenant moved in 2 friends so there was 3 men living in the property. I would question their vetting process, what they are telling their client & whether they carry out inspections. I appreciate you have to take what tenants say as the truth but if someone is trying to give information there is no need to be rude. I work in this industry, & as a Landlord I would want to know.
Rented a property through this branch for 8 years and the simple fact is when the landlords pay the estate agents, the estate agents don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. So when you go to them with issues Martin and Co are not great at getting them sorted, through fear of annoying the landlords with nothing but problems. And because there are plenty of other estate agencies out there that the landlords can go to, they seem wary not to rock the boat. They were never rude to us as tenants. However, weeks after moving in we had issues with rising damp and mould, especially in the bedroom, the walls of which always felt cold and wet. We were simply told it was because we were not putting the heating on enough or opening the windows enough. Fast forward four years and the same problems were persisting though we were managing with a lot of effort. We did, however, also find out from a tradesman who serviced the boiler every year that the flat had flooded just weeks before we moved into the property through a burst water pipe that sat on the other side of the bedroom wall. We were not told anything about this prior to moving into the property. We, as mentioned before, had consistent issues with mould and damp and were now finding out 4 years later that there was a big contributing factor to these issues that was hidden from us by both the landlord and Martin and Co. Needless to say I was very unhappy and even contacted a solicitor as we had gone to great expense painting the flat with anti-mould paint and purchased a large dehumidifier that would be on for around 6-10 hours a day. Both the landlord and estate agency wouldn't comment unsurprisingly which is sneaky to say the least as it screams out guilt. So ultimately, I would definitely not recommend using this estate agency if you are a tenant as they will always take the landlords side.
Uninformative, lack of communication and felt slightly discriminated against.
A very poor letting agent in regards to the tenants, staff were rude and unhelpful to the extent of letting themselves into the flat without having any prior warning or information, when confronted gave the answer "I sent an email it doesn't matter if it got to you" speaking with other tenants with other local companies demonstrated other disparities between treatment of tenants by Martin and co and other letting agents.
Quite frankly our experience renting with Martin & Co Burgess Hill has been abysmal to say the least. Communication from staff at the branch has been a shambles, problems took weeks to get sorted. To name a couple, we were left without a working toilet for almost 2 weeks, and were waiting on a replacement oven for approximately 2 months if memory serves. This doesn't include the fact the property had rats, and this wasn't address at all while we lived at the property. Martin & Co would take it upon themselves to let themselves into the property without prior notice, and without any tenants in the house, even though we very clearly expressed after the first couple of incidents, they were categorically not to enter the property without any of us there, or without prior agreement that they could let themselves in. After we moved out, they then tried to charge us over £200 for fixing the satellite dish, which was carried out in the first week we moved in, as it did not work on arrival to the property, and was confirmed at the time, would not be of any cost to us. I would recommend avoiding Martin & Co like the plague, and I will most definitely not be renting with Martin & Co again. Horrible experience from start to finish, cowboys to say the least.
Avoid renting with Martin & co had such a dreadful experience renting with them a few years ago. Avoid!
